Erythema Nodosum

Overview

Erythema nodosum is a form of panniculitis (a disorder affecting the skin and its fatty tissue), which causes inflammation in the form of tender bumps under the skin.

Common Symptoms

Tender bumps on the shins (which may be red in appearance), fever, enlarged lymph nodes, and joint pain.

Coexisting Diseases and Conditions

Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, sarcoidosis, and malignancies are associated with or trigger erythema nodosum.

Risk Factors and Prevalence

Risk factors include sex (the disease predominately affects females), drug use, infections, and pregnancy.
