Autoimmune Disease List

There are over 90 known autoimmune diseases and counting, affecting at least 14.7 to 23.5 million Americans* – though research indicates that numbers have been growing steadily for years.

Many more conditions are autoimmune-related, or include suspected autoimmune components. With regard to some conditions, there can be differing opinions and conflicting research on various aspects and their relationships with autoimmunity. For more information and support, find your specific condition on our Autoimmune Organizations page.

This is an evolving list since many autoimmune diseases overlap, or exhibit comorbidities, and coexisting symptoms; some of the diseases listed here are variants or subtypes of other diseases. Also noted are rare autoimmune conditions – in the U.S., this means any disease affecting fewer than 200,000 people. In many cases, there exists such little information that the true prevalence is unknown. Our understanding of these conditions is constantly shifting as more information comes to light.

The collection below is meant to serve as a helpful guide, and a starting point for your own research as a person with diagnosed or undiagnosed conditions – whether you’re unsure if you have an autoimmune disease or you think you may have more than one (having three or more is known as Multiple Autoimmune Syndrome or MAS).

*NOTE: GAI finds this number to be the most reputable estimation of autoimmune disease (AD) prevalence in the U.S. Nevertheless, we acknowledge that determining prevalence is a challenging task, and there are currently no up-to-date statistics. Taking into account undiagnosed and misdiagnosed individuals, as well as the rise in AD over the past few years, the number of cases in the U.S. is likely much higher.
