Teen Invents Free App That Could Help Those With Autoimmune Disease
A Virginia high school student is gaining national recognition for developing Swype AI, a free assistive app that enables users with motor impairments to control their computers using hand gestures or voice commands. Sixteen-year-old Dhanvin Ganeshkumar was inspired by his own family’s struggles with tremors and launched the app to make everyday tech more accessible.
Though initially focused on conditions like Parkinson’s and ALS, Swype is now being tested by individuals with rheumatoid arthritis, myositis, multiple sclerosis, lupus, and other conditions that affect motor control.
These diseases often cause tremors, weakness, or joint pain, making traditional input devices difficult or painful to use. Swype utilizes motion tracking and voice recognition to translate hand gestures into smooth, real-time computer control. The app has been fine-tuned to minimize lag and enhance accuracy, making it easier for users with tremors or motor challenges to navigate digital tasks.
Ganeshkumar has partnered with the Virginia Assistive Technology Department for user testing and plans to relaunch Swype’s beta version in September, with a full release expected in November. He’ll also be presenting the app at the 2024 Myositis Association International Patient Conference and contributing to The Chronicle, the quarterly publication of the American Chronic Pain Association.
