Protein that Determines When T Cells Rest or Awaken Identified
Our immune system helps protect us from disease, but this doesn’t mean they’re always combating threats like bacteria or viruses. Sometimes, there aren’t any threats to respond to. In those cases, the immune system waits for the right signals to “awaken.”
In a recent study, scientists identified a protein called MED12 that is the mastermind behind when T cells rest or awaken. The researchers found that MED12 binds to different locations in the genome to control which genes are turned on. These genes can help shuttle T cells towards states of rest or activation. If MED12 is removed from T cells, T cells never become fully activated nor do they fully rest.
Understanding this process could have significance for diseases such as cancer or autoimmune diseases where malfunctions in the T cell response plays a role.
