Chikungunya Surge May Complicate Autoimmune Diagnoses
Chikungunya virus, spread by mosquitoes, is surging worldwide as climate change expands its reach. Recent cases in the Americas and even the U.S. highlight how quickly this once “tropical” virus is moving into new territory. While most people recover after a week, many are left with long-lasting arthritis pain and stiffness that can resemble autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. That similarity may become a growing challenge.
New research shows that after chikungunya infection, the immune system often stays “stuck in overdrive.”
T cells keep firing off inflammation signals, and some patients develop autoantibodies that resemble those found in autoimmune disease. The result is joint pain and disability that looks nearly identical to autoimmune arthritis, even though the underlying biology is different.
As chikungunya spreads, more patients could show up with arthritis that blurs the line between post-viral illness and classic autoimmune disease.
This raises the risk of delayed or missed diagnoses, unnecessary treatments, and new burdens on healthcare systems already stretched by rising autoimmune disease rates.
Scientists say the findings underscore the urgent need for better diagnostic tools that can distinguish viral aftereffects from autoimmune disease, as well as treatments that calm runaway inflammation. Beyond chikungunya, these studies also raise bigger questions about how infections may shape immune health in the decades ahead.
