People living with celiac disease know that reading food labels is an essential part of staying healthy. Yet under current U.S. food labeling laws, only wheat is required to be declared as a major food allergen. Other gluten-containing grains, including barley and rye, are not subject to the same labeling requirements, making it more difficult to quickly identify foods that contain gluten and increasing the risk of accidental exposure.
The Celiac Safety Act of 2026 (H.R. 9048) aims to change that. Introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Representatives Emanuel Cleaver (MO) and Betty McCollum (MN), the bill would require clearer labeling of gluten-containing grains on packaged foods, helping people with celiac disease make safer, more informed food choices. The legislation is endorsed by the Celiac Disease Foundation, the American Gastroenterological Association, and the Society for the Study of Celiac Disease.
