Age-Related Variations in Giant Cell Arteritis
Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is an inflammatory disease affecting blood vessels in the scalp, neck, and arms, primarily affecting individuals over 50, with prevalence increasing with age. However, the specific impact of age on symptom presentation and severity has remained unclear. A recent study published in the journal Vasculitis titled, “Age at diagnosis influences the clinical phenotype, treatment strategies and outcomes in patients with giant cell arteritis: results from the observational GCAGE study on a large cohort of 1004 patients” sought to answer this question.
The study enrolled 1,004 patients diagnosed with GCA from Italy and categorized them into three age groups: over 80, 65-69, and under 65. The researchers then compared symptoms and severity across these groups. Their findings revealed age-related variations in symptoms. Younger patients tended to exhibit large-vessel GCA and systemic symptom onset and were more frequently treated with high-dose corticosteroids compared to their older counterparts. Conversely, older patients exhibited higher mortality rates and a greater overall symptom burden, particularly related to complications such as blindness. Some aspects, such as the number of relapses and time to first relapse, were consistent across age groups.
This study underscores the heightened risk of complications among older individuals with GCA. Armed with this knowledge, healthcare providers can enhance monitoring and interventions to improve the quality of life for these patients.
