Paul Offit on Vaccine Trust, Policy, and Public Communication

In a recent interview with The Evidence Collective, vaccine expert Dr. Paul Offit reflects on the current state of vaccine governance in the U.S. and what may be needed to rebuild public trust. He argues that scientific expertise alone is not enough. Vaccine policy also needs clear, credible communication from people who can explain evidence, acknowledge uncertainty, and respond thoughtfully to public concerns. 

Offit points to lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, including instances where public messaging overstated what vaccines could realistically accomplish, and discusses the risks of a fragmented vaccine policy landscape. He also emphasizes the importance of expert advisory bodies, trusted clinicians, and local community messengers in helping people understand vaccine recommendations. 

The interview is part of The Evidence Collective’s “Next Era of Vaccine Governance” series, which brings together perspectives from clinicians, scientists, policymakers, community leaders, parents, and others involved in shaping or experiencing vaccine policy in the U.S. The series is being developed alongside the Vaccine Integrity Project, with the goal of examining what stronger, more trustworthy vaccine governance could look like in the future.
